Epidural Steroid Injection

Epidural steroid injection, or ESI, is a non-surgical treatment for neck and back pain. When back pain is caused by or related to nerve irritation and inflammation, steroid medication can be used to reduce inflammation and achieve pain relief. If you are seeking relief from pain or stiffness associated with an injury or chronic condition, the Spine Disc Replacement Center will work with you to find the right treatment solution for you. We are pleased to offer both surgical and non-surgical treatment options to our patients, including epidural steroid injections in Houston.

Benefits of Conservative Back and Neck Pain Treatment

Epidural steroid injections are a non-surgical and conservative treatment option for neck and back pain. Conservative treatments offer several benefits for many patients.

  • ESI effectively treats back pain in approximately 50% of patients, eliminating the need to consider surgery or other more invasive treatment options.
  • Conservative treatments are an excellent complementary treatment that can be used in conjunction with massage, physical therapy, and exercise.
  • Steroid injections are associated with fewer risk factors than surgical treatment, which can include risks associated with general anesthesia, bleeding, and infection.
  • Patients undergoing ESI experience very little downtime following treatment, while surgery may require significant rest and recovery for several days or weeks.
  • Conservative treatment is an ideal way to address back and neck pain in patients who are not good candidates for surgery for any reason.

What to Expect from ESI

Treatment via epidural steroid injection is simple, comfortable, and fast. Although you will need someone to drive you home after treatment, you can resume normal activity the following day.

  1. Prior to your injection, you will be asked to lie on your stomach, often with a pillow beneath your hips or stomach. Your physician will numb the area above the injection site with a local anesthetic for comfort.
  2. A needle will be guided into the epidural space of the spinal cord using X-rays for accuracy. Contrast dye is used to ensure the needle is positioned properly before the medication is administered.
  3. Once the needle is in place, your physician will inject a mixture of saline and steroid medication into the area around the inflamed nerve root. In some cases, a fast-acting local anesthetic may be added to provide immediate pain relief following the procedure.
  4. Only a small bandage is needed to cover the injection site following treatment. You will be monitored for a short time before returning home the same day.
